MUSIC INSTRUCTION
- I've been teaching students
of all ages and levels since 1986. My teaching approach is
tailored to the interests and goals of the individual, but also includes
fundamentals such as scales, strength-building exercises, rudiments of theory, and
ear training. Some of the "method" books I've used include the Alfred
and Bastien series, and Hanon's The Virtuoso
Pianist, among many others. These materials are supplemented with arrangements
and transcriptions of popular songs and classical pieces, along with original exercises designed to
teach specific styles and techniques. I also use interactive music websites to introduce students to various concepts of music theory. The styles that I cover include
classical, rock, jazz, and blues.
- I have served as an instructor for an Alachua County Community Education Course
called Learning the Blues, in which I presented three two-hour lectures
covering the history of blues piano from its ragtime beginnings to the
present. The lectures included recorded and live performances.
- I teach at my home, which is equipped with a separate music studio, complete with a piano, organ, multiple keyboards, guitars, and computer/audio equipment for recording performances.
